Weight Loss Over 40\'s

Health and Wellness - Weight loss

Many women over 40 do not succeed in losing the weight they’d like to lose. Seriously, how often have you tried to lose weight without a permanent result? When working with women over 40 I observe the same risks preventing permanent, lasting weight loss over and over…

Deficit in Social Contacts, Care and Sexuality
Women often tend to make up emotional needs by eating- making it impossible to lose weight permanently:

  • Extend your circle of friends and socialize more frequently
  • Cultivate existing friendly relationships
  • Respect your personal life; Put more emphasis on your private life and take time for yourself

Not enough sun
Sunlight has many benefits for our physical and emotional well-being making it easier to lose weight permanently:

  • Go outside daily, not enough sunlight creates cravings for sweets
  • Avoid wearing sunglasses on a cloudy or dreary day
  • During winter months, go to a tanning salon from time to time or get a lamp that produces light similar to daylight

Too much alcohol
Alcohol is high in calories and stimulates hunger:

  • Avoid alcohol when you are feeling blue or are depressed.
  • Drink only on occasion and in social situations, and never drink when you are alone
  • Avoid drinks high in alcohol content

Hormones and Medicament-Induced Side Effects
For a woman over 40 the delicate hormone balance changes- permanent weight loss is harder to achieve:

  • If you go through sudden weight gain, consult a physician
  • Some drugs cause weight gain – talk to your doctor
  • Never end taking a drug without the advice of your physician

Mistakes with Nutrition
Over 40 the body stores fat much easier.
By paying close care to your nutrition, permanent weight loss is possible:

  • Eat a lot of fresh fruit, veggies and whole wheat products
  • Read labels and think of hidden fats in foods such as processed foods, cheese, sausage and pastries
  • Prepare your foods using a healthy method such as steaming, roasting or stewing, and avoid frying. Leave off breaded foods and dressings high in fat.
  • “Avoid many of the “”white”" foods that hold empty carbohydrates such as sugar, flour, bread, cake and rice
  • Control labels before purchasing a product to see how many calories it contains
  • Avoid processed foods
  • Artificial sweeteners might stimulate your appetite, so try not to use them

Weight Loss

Health and Wellness - Trouble Losing Weight

Many people ask why has my weight Loss Slowed? Sooner or latter in every weight loss plan this happens, usually after about 15 lb. weight loss the body just shuts down. It can happen at 5 lb. or even at 30 lbs. Here are some of the ideas to look at if this happens to you:
Don’t Let “Normal” Set Points and Weight Loss Plateaus Stop Your Plan. You have watched you diet for weeks, exercised and saw a steady weight loss. Then suddenly it all ends, no matter what you the scales will not budge. You have reached a set point, or plateau. Why is this inevitable?

* Our body works hard to keep energy intake and output in balance.
* We all like weight loss but our body interprets the weight loss as starvation,
* It shuts down our metabolism.
* The more effort you make to burn more calories the more it slows down.

It takes fewer calories to maintain your weight because you simply weigh less. To lose one pound a week, you’ll need to create a deficit of approximately 500 calories per day. This plateauing effect is one of the biggest motivation killers there is. The best single word of advice is to make a change. In Part 1 of this series you will learn all of the reasons responsible for this problem.
Here are some of the causes range of the slow down include:
# Normal physiologic resistance to weight loss
# Genetic predisposition
# Unrealistic expectations
# Mistakes in food selection, portions, and preparations
# Bored or fatigued What Should You Weigh? Expectations Versus Reality:
Are expectations unrealistic? If you are comparing yourself to the bone-thin celebrity on television or what you weighed in high school, perhaps your expectations are unrealistic.

Genetic Predisposition Cause Weight Ranges for Many People:
70% of the variation in people’s weight may be accounted for by inheritance, which means that a tendency toward a certain weight is more strongly inherited than nearly any other tendency.

Weight Loss is Proportional to Starting Weight:
For an individual who weighs 200 pounds, it will be easier to lose five pounds than for the person weighing 150 pounds. This is normal and expected.

It’s Normal for Weight Loss to Slow Down
Weight loss slows over time because your metabolism slows to prevent what the body interprets as starvation. Although the possibility of starvation is not entirely relevant in the U.S. today, this bodily mechanism did help our ancestors survive during lean times.

Personal Set point:
Each person has his or her own set point, or the level at which one naturally starts to resist weight change and becomes “comfortable” with his or her new weight. There are low set points and high set points; think of them as preset weight zones. Your plateau might be your low set point. Many times the cause of this may be those genes you inherited, other times just from making a few mistakes. Set points often occur at weight points of previous diet attempts.

Depletion of Vitamins and Minerals:
Weight loss is associated not only with reductions in body fat, but also some loss of muscle mass. Invariably numerous vitamins and chemicals as vitamins and co-enzymes needed to breakdown fat are also depleted.

Once you have discovered the reasons for you weight loss slow down, the next step is to do something about it.

Sources of Vitamin B12

New DocumentSources of Vitamin B12

Vitamin B12 is naturally found in animal products, including fish, meat, poultry, eggs, milk, and milk products. Vitamin B12 is generally not present in plant foods, but fortified breakfast cereals are a readily available source of vitamin B12 with high bioavailability for vegetarians. Some nutritional yeast products also contain vitamin B12. Fortified foods vary in formulation, so it is important to read product labels to determine which added nutrients they contain.

Dietary supplements

In dietary supplements, vitamin B12 is usually present as cyanocobalamin, a form that the body readily converts to the active forms methylcobalamin and 5-deoxyadenosylcobalamin. Dietary supplements can also contain methylcobalamin and other forms of vitamin B12.

Existing evidence does not suggest any differences among forms with respect to absorption or bioavailability. However the body’s ability to absorb vitamin B12 from dietary supplements is largely limited by the capacity of intrinsic factor. For example, only about 10 mcg of a 500 mcg oral supplement is actually absorbed in healthy people.

Vitamin B12 Deficiency

New DocumentVitamin B12 Deficiency

Vitamin B12 is an essential water-soluble vitamin that is commonly found in a variety of foods such as fish, shellfish, meat, and dairy products. Vitamin B12 is frequently used in combination with other B vitamins in a vitamin B complex formulation. It helps maintain healthy nerve cells and red blood cells and is also needed to make DNA, the genetic material in all cells. Vitamin B12 is bound to the protein in food. Hydrochloric acid in the stomach releases B12 from protein during digestion. Once released, B12 combines with a substance called intrinsic factor (IF) before it is absorbed into the bloodstream.

The human body stores several years' worth of vitamin B12, so nutritional deficiency of this vitamin is extremely rare. Elderly are the most at risk. However, vitamin B12 deficiency can result from being unable to use vitamin B12. Inability to absorb vitamin B12 from the intestinal tract can be caused by a disease known as pernicious anemia. Additionally, strict vegetarians or vegans who are not taking in proper amounts of B12 are also prone to a deficiency state.

Megaloblastic anemia - due to vitamin B12 deficiency

Vitamin B12 deficiency is a cause of megaloblastic anemia. In this type of anemia, red blood cells are larger than normal and the ratio of nucleus size to cell cytoplasm is increased. There are other potential causes of megaloblastic anemia, including folate deficiency or various inborn metabolic disorders. If the cause is vitamin B12 deficiency, then treatment with B12 is the standard approach. Patients with anemia should be evaluated by a physician in order to diagnose and address the underlying cause.

A day's supply of vitamin B12 can be obtained by eating 1 chicken breast plus 1 hard-boiled egg plus 1 cup plain low-fat yogurt, or 1 cup milk plus 1 cup raisin bran.

Weight Loss

Health and Wellness - Diets

There are many fad diets on the market that should be avoided such as Low Calorie and No Carbs diet, which can unhealthy and cause side effects.

How to spot a fad diet

  • Contradicts what most trusted health professionals are saying
  • Relies on testimonials and anecdotes, rather than scientific evidence
  • Encourages eliminating whole food groups, such as carbohydrates
  • Promises rapid weight loss of more than two pounds a week
  • Suggests that particular foods have the power to burn fat
  • Includes lists of ‘good’ and ‘bad’ foods
  • Encourages strange quantities of particular foods or types of food, such as eating unlimited bowls of cabbage soup, cereal, or only consuming certain foods on certain days of the week
  • Recommends specific food combination
  • Relies on meal substitutes, such as shakes
  • Does not encourage an increase in physical activity.

So What Does Work?

Weight-loss Clinics - on or offline

Meeting with a trained dietitian or nutritionist will provide a specific program, tailored to your individual needs. This is much better than a one-size-fits-all program. You will receive ongoing support and advice as necessary, which should include targeting underlying problems, associated with the initial weight gain.

Low GI Diet

The GI plan was originally created to help diabetics manage their blood sugars better, however it can also be useful for weight loss in those without diabetes. Low GI plans focus on foods that are high fiber, which help to maintain blood sugar levels, and make you feel fuller longer.

The DASH Diet

The DASH Diet is a low-salt, high-carb, high-fiber plan originally designed to help lower blood pressure, but can also be used to aid weight loss. It focuses on basic healthy eating guidelines, emphasizing regular exercise, and is therefore a well balanced approach to losing weight.

Weight Watchers

The Weight Watchers program is based on healthy eating and calorie control. The program provides support, education, advice and promotes exercise. The system uses a point system to count calories and although in the being it feels daunting, after some use, it is easily implemented into your eating habits.

Lifestyle changes are better than ‘diets.’ Learn portion control, eat a balanced diet with lots of fruits and vegetables.

Health and Wellness - Obesity

Obesity is the chronic disease that needs life long treatment. Someone weighing 100 pounds requires profession treatment. Because of the serious health problems such as stroke, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and some of deficiency diseases related to severe obesity, drastic measures may be necessary. Drastic weight-loss procedures are not without side affects, both physical and psychological, making careful physician monitoring a necessity. A dieter can try no devise a plan of action by seeking advice from a registered dietician or other health professional, or by consulting current books.

If more traditional diet changes have failed, treating severe obesity with a very-low-calorie diet. It is quite possible, especially if the person has obesity-related diseases that are not well controlled. This diet helps to restrict the calorie intakes. The proper diet can help to decrease hunger and close to the goal of weight loss. Men can easily lose weight when compare to women. In adulthood, weight gain is common especially in those aged 25 to 44 years. Attention to be taken to these stages. The importance of preventing obesity is to escape with the contagious diseases. Omega-3 and Inflammation

I've been writing about omega-3 fatty acids for some time now. Research continues to show how important these fatty acids really are to the human body. The latest study at the University of Pittsburgh confirms what previous studies have found.

"Scientists at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine went on a molecular fishing trip and netted a catch of new mediators that not only can explain how omega-3 fatty acids reduce inflammation, but also hint at novel treatments for a host of diseases linked to inflammatory processes." [1]

Before I continue with this study, let's take a look at what omega-3 fatty acids are, and the health benefits behind them. To do so I've included a quote below from the University of Maryland Medical Center's web site:

"Omega-3 fatty acids are considered essential fatty acids: They are necessary for human health but the body can't make them -- you have to get them through food. Omega-3 fatty acids can be found in fish, such as salmon, tuna, and halibut, other seafood including algae and krill, some plants, and nut oils. Also known as polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), omega-3 fatty acids play a crucial role in brain function as well as normal growth and development. They have also become popular because they may reduce the risk of heart disease. The American Heart Association recommends eating fish (particularly fatty fish such as mackerel, lake trout, herring, sardines, albacore tuna, and salmon) at least 2 times a week." [2]

All of the research I've found concurs that "omega-3 fatty acids reduce inflammation and may help lower risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease, cancer, and arthritis. Omega-3 fatty acids are highly concentrated in the brain and appear to be important for cognitive (brain memory and performance) and behavioral function." [2]

This information is not from a single study, rather from numerous studies over several years in which universities have been doing research. Runaway inflammation can lead to various serious health problems in the body involving the heart, arteries, lungs, joints and more. That's probably why so much research is being done not only on inflammation but also on nutrients, like omega-3 fatty acids, that fight inflammation.

If you're looking to incorporate more omega-3-fatty acids into your diet, fish is your best bet. The purest choice fish include canned sardines or mackerel, wild Alaskan salmon and sable fish, and small, troll-caught tuna. However, if you're not a fish eater, TriVita's Omega Prime is a supplement that's high in omega-3 fatty acids.

TriVita's Omega Prime contains a premier and unique blend of four different types of the most highly regarded Essential Fatty Acids (EFA) oils – Fish, Flaxseed, Evening Primrose and Perilla Seed. It also uses only contaminant-free fish oil that has undergone a 10 stage distilling process.

Just as research on omega-3 fatty acids will continue, I will continue to write about what researchers find regarding this highly important nutrient.
